How to use a Scanner

Your scanner and scanner software might look a bit different to the ones in the slideshow, but the basic ways of working will be the same.

Read the following information about using a scanner http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/guides/using-a-scanner.

Activity: Take some old printed photos you have at home and scan them in to the computer. Save them in a file that is in order of the time they were taken. All images should be saved as .jpg (read about the difference between a .gif and a .jpg here)

Complete the following tasks:

Task 1 – Photoshoot

Description of task: 
You are required to plan and carry out a photo shoot using digital cameras. The subject of your photos will be a friend or family member.

Resources needed

  • A digital camera (either your own, from GNLC or in your mobile phone)
  • Checklist

Assessment task instructions
You are required to:

  • change the camera settings (flash on/off etc) to suit the kind of photo you want to take
  • take between 6 – 10 photos of their subject. At least half need to be close-up shots
  • ensure you have completed and ticked off all the items on the checklist.
  • upload the images to a computer

Save the camera shots to your USB and bring hand them in to the VCAL Coordinator.

Task 2 – Photo mash-up

Description of task:
You will learn how to use a photo editing program to mash together two or more photos.

Assessment task instructions:
Students are required to:

  • Open up their photo in GIMP
  • Find an image they would like to show getting ‘zipped’ out of them
  • Save the image in their folder
  • Follow the handout to mash together two images
  • Save the image with a new name
  • Print one copy on the colour printer

Save the mashed-up image to your student Y drive and inform your trainer.
