Your scanner and scanner software might look a bit different to the ones in the slideshow, but the basic ways of working will be the same.

Activity: Take some old printed photos you have at home and scan them in to the computer. Save them in a file that is in order of the time they were taken. All images should be saved as .jpg (read about the difference between a .gif and a .jpg here)
